VHDX to VHD conversion

Recently I have started using Windows 8 to use Hyper-V on it.
Hyper-V on Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 have new virtual hard disk format .VHDX which supports storage capacity of 64TB. You can download .VHDX format specification from here.
By default Hyper-V takes .vhdx format while creating virtual hard disk. And unfortunately Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008R2 and Virtual Box don’t support this format yet.
So here is the method of conversion from VHDX to VHD.

1) First you need to create virtual disk with extension .vhd. (I assume you have already a hard disk with .VHDX format)
2) Then go to New option Under Action section on right top box in Hyper-V >> Click on New >>
Select Hard Disk.
3) You will see below screen, Click on Next button
HD Wizard Popup

4)  Select VHD format and Click on Next button
SelectFormat

5)  You can keep default option selected or change it Dynamic as per your need. Click on Next button.
Type of disk

6) Give name to VHD and go Next.
give name to vhd

7) Select third option “Copy the contents of the specified virtual hard disk”.
and give your .vhdx drive path which you have to convert to .vhd format.
Convert

8) Click on Next button and this will copy your .vhdx content to your .vhd.
And VHD is ready to use on Virtual box, windows server 2008 hyper-v.

  4. How do you do this from 2008 R2 server. I don't have the windows 8 machine anymore that created the image and I don't run server 2012?

  6. You are missing a bit here. Hyper-V has always been able to convert a physical volume to a virtual disk (regardless of the version).

You state that you begin with a VHDX but you convert a physical volume in creating the VHD. Did you mount the VHDX to the Hyper-V Server?

  7. In step 7 he says type in the path to the vhdx file. He didn't covert a phyiscal volume.

  8. Hi BranEh, Thanks for posting comment.

I had created VM type Vhdx, but hyper-v does not convert VHDX to VHD. Edit Disk option didnt work for me, So I created new physical value type VHD and copied content of VHDX to VHD.
If there is any other please let us know.

  9. I have converted vhdx file to vhd successfully, but after i use it in 2008 R2 Hyperv, it shows windows startup logo and then keep rebooting. The VHD file is Windows 2008 R2 Domain Controller.

I have tried to use both method of Convert / copy the contents . Both complete ok, but still after adding it in 2008 HV, it keeps rebooting.

    Howto solve it ?

  10. Looking at "Configure Disk" screen from windows 2008 r2 hyper-v now, it does not have the 3rd option for me to copy from existing vhdx; only have option 1 and 2 at step number 7 from above instruction.

Am I suppose to be able to see 3rd option from Windows 2008 R2 hyper-v? thanks

As far as I know, you can buy it from the authorized vendor online http://goo.gl/xjU3jn . You can count on them 100% as this site is the partner vendor of Microsoft. This is the biggest competitive point.

  22. I got windows 7 ultimate sp1 shop for my Sony Vaio Pcg-r505elkit laptop from http://www.MicrosoftStoreinc.com about 17 weeks ago, you could try.

Software arrived fast & exactly what I ordered and I saved $30 compared to everywhere else! sharepoint server 2010 enterprise key windows 8 key would buy again from. This was the third time I have purchased something from them and they have quickly become the first first place I look for buying what I need! Provided a shipping number that never worked in shipper's database. Shipment arrived later than predicted date. When I queried about the shipment, I received two e-mails, one saying it shipped via USPS (wrong), and DHL (right). They had what I needed at a good price. The purchase went smoothly and the delivery worked as promised (eMail & download). The product installed and works as expected. This is about as good as anyone could expect from a Vendor. 2VlV1

  25. Nice post, Windows 7 pro is the most recommended OS to do almost all work, So I recommend you to activate your existing OS being purchased its license code from: ODosta Store
Which is distributing license for all types of Microsoft Products with good customer support. I personally used it and have a good experience.
Upgrading your OS to windows 10 can create some technical issues, So I recommend you to have clean installation of Windows 7 windows 8 or Windows 10 and activate it via legal license.

I don't think you can activate your system without a product key either with a free one. In fact, you can just buy a genuine product key from the site. It's very cheap and guaranteed. Choose one key from the site http://www.Microsoftkeysales.com/ and place the order. The email will be sent to you at the first time. The whole process is very simple and easy to follow. Next time, when you or your friends encounter with the same problem, directly tell them to place the order onsite and you will let your system activated in short time.

Hearing all the negative sentiments toward the Windows 10 Product Key OS made me really cautious in upgrading from Windows 7.
Finally, my Windows 7 became buggy enough that I decided it was time for me to go ahead and upgrade.
The days of reformatting my hard drive and reinstalling Windows OS (95, 98, XP...), when the computer started to act up, are over. I got the pro upgrade version....for a really great price on http://www.MSofficialstore.com/ .
I purchased all my software from them. They are the best online store I ever buy.
Installation took a while, with lots of downloading and installing drivers, updates...etc.
When it was finally done, computer was running a lot faster, and all of the weird behaviors of previous installation were gone.
Now as far as using the new OS, it really wasn't that big of a deal. Yes, it's different from the previous Windows; but after 2 or 3 days, I've picked up so many cool features that I truly believe it's a superior OS compared to the previous Windows releases. Really.
The interface is quite convenient once you figure out how to use all the features and what happens when you move your cursor around the screen.
Oh, yeah, and I don't have a touchscreen. Although I'm certain that a touchscreen would definitely be a more effective way to navigate Windows 8, I really have no problems using just the mouse.
So, there you have it. I love this new OS.
